B) 1956

C) 1962

Answer:

B) From January 15, 1956 Annual Report: “While we began using our sanctuary last year, it was not entirely completed until this year. We began using the classrooms in the new wing as fast as the carpenters moved out of them, and have been happy in our expanded space and new furnishings. The parlor is the envy of half the churches in town. Mr. Halladay kept pushing here and there to get various things done and additional items we had not intended to include when we began our improvements kept calling for his attention. We owe to him a great debt of gratitude.”

From a resolution read and adapted at a congregational meeting held February 27, 1923 – the basement under the building was to provide space for bowling alleys.

TRUE

or

FALSE

Answer:

TRUE: From a resolution read and adapted at a congregational meeting held February 27, 1923: We recommend a well built and substantial foundation of concrete sufficiently deep to provide a basement under the entire building. This basement to provide space for bowling alleys, locker rooms, shower baths, toilets, furnace and fuel room and in addition a very fair auditorium if needed at some future time. For the present we believe the large room in the rear part which will also serve as a basketball court can be used for social meeting and programs.

Our church congregation was established May 26, 1876 therefore we are appropriately named First Presbyterian Church.

FALSE

Answer:

Here’s why the answer is FALSE: The church we know as Union Congregational located at 716 S. Madison Street chartered September 21, 1835 and was named First Presbyterian Church because they were the first Presbyterian Church in Green Bay. At that time, Union also shared affiliation with the Congregational Conference. In 1851 Union ceased its affiliation with the Presbyterian Church and became a charter member of the Winnebago Association and Wisconsin Conference of Congregational Churches so they no longer used the name First Presbyterian Church making it available for our use 25 years later in 1876. We weren’t actually the first but the second albeit we had the hand me down name which allowed us to become the “First” when we were established 41 years after the official First Presbyterian Church was established.
