Gestures of Generosity, September 2023

Gestures of Generosity

Thank you for your Gesture!

We have struggled for years over the challenge of cooling the Fellowship Room during the hottest summer months, and in an amazing gesture of generosity an anonymous donor has done the research, arranged for the electrical work, and installed a room air conditioner in the window for us! If you haven’t been in the Fellowship Room much in the last month, be sure to stop by and see for yourself just how cool and comfortable it can now be. Deep gratitude to the donor for caring for our physical as well as spiritual health.

St. John Shelter Donations

Also, in early August we were blessed to have so many members who answered the call for blankets and backpacks for donation to St. John’s Shelter.

It didn’t take long after asking before people opened their hearts and generously donated to this great cause! Stephanie Fahringer’s car was overloaded with all the donations that were received.

A special thanks to Elliot Stensen who spent that morning helping out at the Pantry and the afternoon helping load up the blankets and backpacks that were given. Susan at St. John’s helped unload the car and it was just amazing how guests lined up immediately and asked for a blanket. Within just a few minutes all the blankets were passed out.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who contributed, especially Lisa and Dave Solper’s friends who donated MANY! God has blessed us so we could in turn bless many folks truly in need.

If you have a Gestures of Generosity story to share, please contact Cheri at communications@firstpresgreenbay.org and tell us your story.

Feed My Starving Children MobilePack 2023

Feed My Starving Children. Blue letters with white background

October 2nd through October 5th

Are you ready to have some fun, and make a difference at the same time?

Then plan to volunteer for the 2023 Feed My Starving Children MobilePack event in Green Bay!

The MobilePack will be held Monday, October 2nd through Thursday, October 5th. This year’s event will continue to be held at Green Bay Community Church, and is open to everyone – young and old alike.

There are 8 different packing shifts to volunteer and we have reservations for our congregation on the 6 shifts which are indicated below.

FMSC 2023 packing schedule

Registration opened Sunday, August 27th. The FMSC registration sign up sheet can be found in the office during the week and in the back of the sanctuary on Sunday or Register Online. Spots fill quickly! Register early to get your desired time.

If you’re unable to register online or visit church to register in person, please contact us at office@firstpresgreenbay.org or call (920) 437-8121 with the day and time you’d like to sign up for and we’ll take care of the registration for you.

If you haven’t packed or volunteered before, this is the year to see what all the excitement is about. Please consider helping in this great cause. For more information or questions, please contact Kirke Ryder at kirke.ryder@gmail.com.

And, please prayerfully consider a donation to FMSC through our church. Simply select FMSC in the drop down menu in Give Now section of our website or note FMSC on your check.

For every person packing we’re hoping to receive a $60 donation.

Please help us reach our goal of $60/packer.

Why are we looking for a $60 donation for every packer from our congregation?

To pack a half million meals (500,000) we have to raise $145,000 because every meal we pack is at the cost of 29 cents each. If everyone who came to pack had someone donate $60 on their behalf, we’d cover the cost of the food purchased that a volunteer is going to pack. Without that donation we rely 100% on fundraisers and despite the number of fundraisers we have, there’s always a shortfall to cover the cost of the food that we’re packing. Please consider sponsoring one of our First Presbyterian volunteer packers and donate $60 to cover the cost for what they’ll be packing.

Thank you for your support!

Did you know? Tuesday Trivia!

Our Name that Member! feature gave us the opportunity to learn just how well we really know each other. But how well do we know our church?

Here’s this week’s Did you know? Tuesday Trivia!

When was the 2nd church building erected on the present site?

a) 1902

b) 1892

c) 1880

Answer:

On October 16, 1892, with Rev. J. F. Young as pastor, the 2nd second church building was fully equipped and including electric lights, was erected on our present site. The cost of this building, $7,000, was a gift from David McCartney, a local banker.

Did you know? Tuesday Trivia!

Our Name that Member! feature gave us the opportunity to learn just how well we really know each other. But how well do we know our church?

Here’s this week’s Did you know? Tuesday Trivia!

Our church congregation was established May 26, 1876 therefore we are appropriately named First Presbyterian Church.

FALSE

Answer:

Here’s why the answer is FALSE: The church we know as Union Congregational located at 716 S. Madison Street chartered September 21, 1835 and was named First Presbyterian Church because they were the first Presbyterian Church in Green Bay. At that time, Union also shared affiliation with the Congregational Conference. In 1851 Union ceased its affiliation with the Presbyterian Church and became a charter member of the Winnebago Association and Wisconsin Conference of Congregational Churches so they no longer used the name First Presbyterian Church making it available for our use 25 years later in 1876. We weren’t actually the first but the second albeit we had the hand me down name which allowed us to become the “First” when we were established 41 years after the official First Presbyterian Church was established.
